Summer Daze

There’s something so intoxicating about that first moment when Summer really hits, isn’t there? School is out, the world slows down just a bit, and we’re all able to live a little more spontaneously. This season I’m sticking close to home, eating well, catching an excellent local art exhibit, and doing my best to embrace these sweet, languorous days.

“I love soup, and especially cold gazpacho this time of year. To mix things up, I like to make a version from melons—it’s so refreshing, and the flavors are just a little bit surprising. This recipe is an excellent primer, but you can riff off it and adjust ingredients to your taste.”

“Few television genres are as satisfying to me as a juicy period drama, and The Gilded Age delivers. Set in New York at the end of the 19th century, it has all the intrigue, history, and sumptuous outfits you could hope for. The third season just came out, and I can’t wait to immerse myself in it.”

“Can you tell I enjoy watermelon? The watermelon margarita is the drink of the summer, and with good reason: it’s tart, just a touch sweet, and perfect for the hottest days. If you’re feeling bold, you can sprinkle a little cayenne into the salt rim or add a thin slice or two of jalapeño to your cocktail shaker.”

The Paris Novel is glorious summer reading! Ruth Reichl is the reigning queen of food writing, and her novel is a true feast of the senses, with beautifully evocative descriptions of 1980s Paris culture, food and fashion. Perfect for anyone yearning for a heady European escape.”

“This is the first posthumous retrospective on Ruth Asawa, one of San Francisco’s most iconic and beloved modern artists and sculptors: I love the flowing organic forms of her hanging looped-wire sculptures.”

“Is there anything more summery than this sandal? The ultra-minimalist silhouette looks so delicate and feminine on the foot, and cerulean blue is one of my favorite colors right now. And comfort is key—I can wear them from morning to night.”
